Erm, actually, the State of the Church (“Papal States”) ceased to exist in 1870.
The Vatican City State, a separate political entity, didn’t become independent until 1929.
The caliphate fell when Ali died, there hasn’t been a true caliphate since.
Actually imo one of the worst events in the history of the world. Caliph based in Turkey would be a very good, moderating influence on Islam.
