    1. In his book he writes that he tried summiting Everest without the Icefall Doctor routes, but ultimately had to abandon that and join an expedition on their permit (iirc). The book is a great read, e.g. he lived in a tent next to the barracks during the military or he was angry when someone wanted to help him carry gear a bit because it felt like cheating etc.
