    1. Edit: it’s late, I was half asleep and misread that this was obviously referring to the UK. My bad. Shits bad everywhere

~~Citizens United was a big part of it~~

~~and you know, republicans gradually pulling and pulling the country farther and farther to the right, day by day~~

    2. idk the super-rich vacuuming up every tax break possible and dodging paying fair wages for decades?

    3. The worship at the altar of ever increasing house prices, right-to-buy of social housing, “shareholder is god” mentality, fake capitalism, i.e. bailout of bank = good, bailout of poor family = bad, people voting with their wallets, etc…

after the world war, entire nations needed to be rebuilt, so there was plenty of work. Today, everything is already built, so not much need for workers

    5. You left out good corporate pensions. What was the corporate tax rate back in those good old days? Hint: 50%. Nowadays everyone is a stock or crypto investor One trade away from billions.

    6. This is for every country. I didn’t grow up in the UK or US, but when I was a kid my parents could buy a house, live decently on 1 or at best 1 and a half salary, a car, nice quality of life, free healthcare, vacations, we would actually travel, didn’t have to worry about much.

That’s all gone now. I will probably never own my home and I make five times as much as both my parents made together.

    7. Because none that is really true.

Ever seen video of normal peoples houses in the 1960s?

Women had to stay home (although many worked) because you dont have washing machines and preprepared food.

The vacations were in a caravan in some field in essex.

The beaches were covered in rubbish and people go cancer off the river run off and acid rain.

Its nostalgia for some golden age that wasnt.

    8. Resources have been deliberately and aggressively funneled up the socio-economic ladder for generations. Thats what has happened, entirely predictably.

The boomer generation fucked our world over. The first generation to leave it worse than they found it.

The conservative mantra of ‘fuck everyone else I’m ok jack’ driven by Thatchers policies of division and class separation! Bosses got greedier and she supported that drive for greed! Now the cycle is clear to see – prices increase to make the rich richer, low wages (to make the rich richer) don’t support that ‘one wage’ ethos!

    11. I don’t think this is true for England. They had war rationing through the fifties and their economy never got a solid foothold after Thatcher hollowed out the industrial base. There was like a 20 year span between 1960 and 1980 where they tried to equal American success but never got there.

To this day the only thing keeping the UK propped up is London being the world center for dirty international money

    12. As the rich elite become richer, there is less money to go around for the rest of us. Less money means we can’t afford the things our fathers and mothers could. when 10 percent of the population controls 90 percent of the wealth, 90 percent of the population is going to have a very hard time existing.

The same amount of money is there today as was in my parents day. It just doesn’t get around the economy because the rich horde it all.

    13. The capitalist predators were unshackled and released to prey upon we the people. This is not rocket science, people.

In addition to greed and policies that everyone has already mentioned. The ratio of workers to retirees is the other big one. Pensions and care hoover up all the budget that would have been used for public services.
