I read a Reddit AMA years ago where the guy had grandparents that won the lottery, and it was an AMA on his experience. He said there was family that lived on the other side of the country that moved local to their grandparents once they learned they had a bunch of money. The gall of some people to straight up gold dig is crazy to me, but not at all surprising.

Disappearing for a while is actually what financial advisors say to do. Regardless of where you live or what your situation was, people are going to be coming out of the woodwork to beg for a piece of it.
Best practice is to take the lump sum (inflation and investment opportunity makes the annuity worth less,) leave town for a while, take that time to get a trust set up to ensure you cannot spend that all before you die, come back once the dust settles and you have everything secured.
