LA change > Lightbulbs vs LEDS

    1. It’s not as dramatic a difference as all this. One is overcast which would scatter light differently because, during overcast nights, there is more than likely lower hanging fog or other such moisture differences that would help with light scattering. It *would* make a difference, just not like what’s shown here.

Edit: I’m meaning this for the first picture mostly. The second picture has a mix of both overcast and not, while the 3rd pic seems more accurate on the bottom two for sure.

    2. Personally love the yellow tint it gives the nighttime character vs the LED but I don’t mind the white light

    3. Those orange lights were high-pressure sodium lamps, which were inefficient, expensive, and terrible for skyglow. LEDs save power, cut costs, and make the city look so much cleaner. Props to LA for the upgrade!

    4. Even though they are LED’s, why not use a less intense color? They could just change the temperature to a color that’s better for human eyes at night

Booooo. At least make the LED’s a reasonable tint. That sterile white is gross and depressing.

    6. They also made them significantly higher up in lots of neighborhoods, which has been really abrasive at my apt

What’s interesting is the change of brightness of the night sky in these photographs. As LEDs apparently are much brighter than sodium lamps, exposure time was reduced to get to a similar rendering of the street. As such, not as much light is captured from the night sky.

    8. I prefer the warmer colour but the difference in light pollution is … Well, like night and day.

Personally like the yellow incandescent tint better but the clarity of detail is better with whiter spectrum

I understand why it’s better, but me and my blue eyes enjoy the left 🥲 between LED streetlights, piercing headlights, and the god-awful lighting in a lot of stores, I’m getting flash banged everywhere I go.

I don’t know how much more expensive it would be but it would be fun if they used RGB LEDs and could change the colors for different events, holidays etc.

Why the light bulbs create more light pollution? Is it due to the geometry of the light casing?

    13. some of the LED lights they installed in my part of kentucky turned purple so it is like driving though a rave.

    14. The orange glow of the high pressure sodium lights will always remind me of making the 8hr overnight drive to my grandparents for Christmas as a child.

    15. Forgive my unpopular opinion, but I cannot fathom why someone would prefer the warm lights outside. Indoors for my living room? Yeah of course!

    16. I was in LA 2017 and 2019 and I noticed the streets at night had a different “feel” to them compared to the Norhteast but didn’t think enough about why.

      This makes sense now.
