To be fair there’s a pretty big difference from modern soccer and what they were playing back in the day. Old timey soccer sounds fucking fun honestly. The “field” was usually an entire town with one goal on either side. There weren’t “teams” per se but rather East town vs West town or North vs South. There were exceedingly few rules but interestingly “do not touch the ball with hands” was pretty much universal (except in the places where “soccer” was pretty much just rugby with a round ball). It was a contact sport and fist fights were not only commonplace but often had their own specific rules like no punches to the head. One side “won” when around 3-5 goals were met and that signalled the end of the game, no timers here the game could last more than one day with a sort of “cease-fire” during the night so people could sleep. It was a sport that involved everyone in town, including elderly people and children. Honestly sounds like a good time. It was often played after harvest festival when agricultural workers had enough time off to travel into town.

Not only that, go to the UK this time of year and you’ll run into a bunch of people saying “Halloween, why are we celebrating an American holiday?” even though Halloween is the UK’s oldest holiday and they invented it (obv wasn’t the UK back then).Â

I thought soccer was what rich British called it to distinguish themselves from ‘football playing peasants’.
