My single mother bought this townhouse 05 I grew up in this house live here till now and I just found out yesterday. There is a air filter in the furnace. Yes you got that right 20 years of the same filter. I just changed it today. Oh my God I can’t believe we’ve been breathing this air for 20 years

Can’t believe that your heater and AC actually worked. On the plus side, your energy bills should go down now.
That’s crazy. I’d probably recommend having your air ducts cleaned – including your dryer duct. If the air filter hasn’t been changed, I’m guessing the dryer ducting is packed full of lint.
You haven’t been breathing it, the filter stopped all that.
These filters are on the inlet side and are there to protect your equipment, not to protect your lungs.
At that point the dirt becomes the filter
I’m shocked your system still worked! I remember asking my parent if they needed any filters while I was at the store. They said “nah, I’m on top of it. I change them regularly.” “How often is that?” I asked. “About once a year.” I was shocked and they said “what, how often are supposed to change them?” I said “Once a MONTH”
Poor filter has been worked to the BONE 😂😂
I always wondered if a clogged air filter actually filters better. The stuck bits of dust and fabric act as filters in their own right, trapping other dust and fibre particles. The power needed to move air through the extra resistance is non negligible.
Makes me think of that line in Lethal Weapon 2.
“The pan under your refrigerator–”
“There’s a pan under there?”
Years ago when I was in college I lived in a walk out basement apartment in a house owned by an elderly couple. I noticed the air blowing through the hvac system smelled musty so I asked the owners how long it had been since the filter had been changed, and they had no idea…so I went down to check it out. I struggled to get the filter out, and when I finally did, I found a mummified squirrel, which had somehow gotten between the filter and some type of metal mesh that was immediately behind the filter…so it was splayed out spread-eagle in the middle of the filter. I don’t recall if the air smell improved once I replaced the filter and removed the squirrel, but psychologically I felt a lot better knowing it was no longer there.
That duct blower motor deserves a metal, i can’t believe it didn’t trip
Your HVAC is a beast to survive 20 years of neglect.
Start saving up to replace the air conditioner
I just know that there’s something in my house that I am also neglecting to this level and I just don’t know what it is -yet
I have to give credit to everyone who has already commented and didn’t point out that the picture is upside down. I couldn’t do that. It messed with brain too much.
We have 2 cats and I have severe allergies to basically everything outside…we change our filters at LEAST once a month. I can’t even imagine this 😳
I was laughing at this my lungs out. Very very funny. 20 years with a clogged air filter! ROFL! LMAO! 🤣
lol. You don’t understand how air filters work.
You are not breathing that air. Air filters stop you from breathing that air. This is the air filter actually working. And here’s the funny part, they work better the older they are.
Now here’s why you are supposed to be changing these every 3 or 6 months. Because look at that thing. It is covered in dust. There’s no where for the air to get through. That means you are wasting a ton of energy trying to blow air though this thing and barely anything is able to get out.
I thought I was in r/nasa and looking at some heat shield of sorts
Think of it this way:
Like a crowd crush, the dust is so compacted it isn’t letting any more dust through, so the air is clean!

guys. HVAC technicians are a thing. our oil furnace went down twice every two years we just got it serviced. There ain’t a 20 year old HVAC on Earth that doesn’t get serviced.
The air flow after changing the filter must blow you away.
Forbidden waffle.
This is the 3rd time I’ve seen this in 1 hour, Reddit really likes it I guess
Ain’t this under “oddly satisfying “
Make some nice soup with that
