For those who don’t know, the characters of her name are “猫猫”, which is pronounced “maomao” in Mandarin and literally is just the kanji for cat repeated twice. It is how you would affectionately call a cat, so it roughly translates to “kitty”. Obviously, “猫” is typically pronounced “neko” in Japanese, but her name is specifically written as “マオマオ” (Maomao) in katakana.
Incidentally, the cat that she and the hack doctor adopts is also named “Maomao”. However, in this case, the characters used are “毛毛”. “毛” means fur and is pronounced “mao” in Mandarin (or usually “ke” in Japanese), so “毛毛” roughly translates to a cute way of saying “furry”.
