    1. Seems right . Then endorse some upgradable and accessories 😅 like it’s a customize car

    2. Chevrolet did that with the Spark, Sonic, Cruze… highest volume selling vehicles. They realized there was little profit and now they’re just selling small and big SUVs

    3. I’m in the automotive industry – I’m going to respond based on the American market.

Basically, no. Firstly, backup cameras are legally required on all new vehicles so you’re going to need a screen at minimum. Once you have a screen, it’s cheaper to run everything through the screen.

Secondly, the demand for small, simple, cars with no tech is not actually there outside of pockets of social media. Those cars existed, they didn’t sell well. This is obvious when it comes to things like trucks, people say they want access cabs and simpler trucks – those still exist and don’t sell well.

SLATE is going to do this with add ons , or packages that if your a gear head you can turn the 2 seater truck into a 4 seated one. Even wraps for the body.

    5. There WAS a car company with that philosophy.

      They were called Geo.

They started in 1989, and then went bust a decade later.

So no, apparently their parent company COULDNT make money off of selling cheap, stripped-down version of their cars.

This isn’t as easy as it sounds. A large part of a car’s size is determined by a mixture of safety and mileage laws. Safety laws mean more mass, while mileage means more expensive parts.

Anybody with a high school degree could design a cheap car with fantastic mileage. But making one that isn’t a planet-killing death trap is hard.

      Check out the Mitsubishi Mirage.

$18k. Nearly featureless. The size of Shaq’s shoe.

My wife and I rented one when we visited her folks earlier this year. I can see why it’s not a popular vehicle.

    8. They can drastically increase the worth of their car even with moderate amounts of tech. They have little incentive for building cars to sell for cheaper.

Why sell only fries, if you can sell it with a burger, soda and sauce, too, and make profits on each item?

no they couldn’t, most of the tech is either legally mandated, such a good selling point they make way more money by including it, or shockingly cheaper than lower technology.

    10. But why? Sure, some parts are annoying/dangerous like having no physical buttons for AC, but having sensors or a backup camera in your car make driving (especially parking) so much more convenient. Having access to data like gas usage can be helpful too if you have to plan something. And if my car had no bluetooth, I wouldn’t be able to listen to the music I like without much work. Having a map with gps next to your steering wheel is quite helpful too.

We don’t need stuff like huge screens in the car but being (almost) completely anti tech is such a boomer statement that Reddit loves to spread at every chance.

    11. Lol no,
No one will be willing to start rolling their windows, what you might be referring to is a car around 2012ish time

    12. The Mitsubishi Mirage is just that. It seriously sucks. Granted, that’s the assignment, but its also not a great value. It may be the cheapest “real” car, or very close to it, but its still just a bad deal. A 3 year old CPO better car for about the same money or less, is a better value.

    13. EU says no. Every new car must have speed limit assistance and, therefore, a camera with literal FUCKTONS of engineering and software behind. Also, collision warning (requires a front radar). Automated crash emergency call (requires data link), too.
Catalytic converter (expensive af. Requires lots of sensors and a dedicated control-routine embedded in the engine control.)

After 2035, only EV will be allowed. These are on a whole new level of expensive technology.

    14. You think they will. But they won’t. If they did you’d just buy a base model for a ford maverick, focus or Honda civic, Toyota Corolla, etc. people are paying for the extras hence why manufacturers still provide them. For 20-30k these cars can be had. Accounting for inflation in 1980 a car was 7-8,000 new which is 27-31,000 in today’s money.

I hate tech in cars. Get rid of the giant screen and give me a key that that physically inserts into the doors and steering wheel.

No they don’t. Simple cars sell less at dealerships. It’s the same reason most cars are gray black and white. They sell better.

It’s because the people who want simple cars are buying used. People who buy new like fancier shit.
