Louis Daguerre was just photographing a Paris street. Exposure took 10 minutes, so everyone moving disappeared — except one guy getting his boots polished. He accidentally became the first man to be photographed

Wouldn’t that then be two people being photographed unless of course he was polishing his own boot?

In 1838 cameras took a long time to expose the images. They basically used photochemical processes to burn the images onto metal plates. Since most moving images couldn’t stay still long enough to get burned into the plate completely they weren’t captured but this man was getting his shoe polished hence completely still he became the first person to be photographed without realising.

“Louis Daguerre was a French painter who created “Daguerreotypes”, a process that gave portraits a sharp reflective style, like a mirror.”
