    1. Taken by Sir Edward Augustus Inglefield who was a British [Royal Navy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Navy) officer who led one of the searches for the missing [Arctic](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic) explorer [John Franklin](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Franklin) during the 1850s. In doing so, his expedition charted previously unexplored areas along the northern Canadian coastline, including [Baffin Bay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baffin_Bay), [Smith Sound](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smith_Sound) and [Lancaster Sound](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancaster_Sound). During subsequent expeditions he took photos the inuit which are the earliest known.
