At the Imperial War Museum, a powerful exhibit captures the final moments of World War I using real seismic data recorded as the war came to an end. Scientists transformed the ground vibrations caused by artillery fire into sound, allowing visitors to hear the intense shelling that took place in the last minutes before the Armistice at 11 A.M. on November 11, 1918!
The audio plays through a custom-built soundbar, gradually shifting from the thunder of battle to an unsettling silence, marking the exact moment peace returned after years of devastation. This haunting experience brings history to life in a deeply personal and unforgettable way.

The bird at the end, I guess this is what peace sounds like

Imagine surviving years of trench warfare only to get hit at 10:59 AM on Armistice Day. History really said one last jump scare.

It’s wild to me that they just kept firing even though they knew it was over, until the official deadline.Â
I wish I could hear this one day, it feels like war has been here forever. Or at least will last forever.

It was a very deadly last few hours. More casualties than D-Day.

If this is true, this makes war (read: humanity) even more stupid in my eyes than it has been up until now.

Know that this is a recreation of the sounds and not the actual recording.

When they knew it was coming, who kept shooting after 10:45?

Near Mons in Belgium lie the bodies of John Parr and George Ellison. They are buried opposite each other. John was named as the first British soldier to die in WW1, just 17 days after the British declared war.
George Ellison, died 90 minutes before the war ended, and is named as the last British soldier to die in the Great War.
I think it’s fitting they are buried in the same cemetery.

Think about the last minute and where people were. I think Adolf Hitler was in a hospital recovering from wounds suffered in the war. FDR was recovering in New York at his mom’s house from Pneumonia. Churchill was in London watching the celebrations(and I suspect having some whiskey). Stalin was in Moscow, a leader in the new government. Mussolini was somewhere in Italy doing his thing.
All these men would be center stage just 20ish years later, shaping the future of humanity. They would be responsible for a war that would leave 50 million plus people dead. The war would start with German expansion and end with a bomb that we are in eternal fear over. They were the men to oversee it all, their fates intertwined with each other, and no one had any idea what would unfold.

I feel like if I know they have agreed to peace, but we still have to keep fighting till a specified time, im just hiding and shooting at trees or whatever till its over. Not gonna kill someone when we have ALREADY AGREED TO PEACE.
