One of the most surreal places I’ve ever been to. It is absolutely otherworldly down there. Equal parts fascinating and creepy

    2. Somebody would be very confused if they tried to navigate the actual Paris catacombs using a map from a mobile Heroes of Might and Magic clone.

    3. These images bring back memories. I was an expat in France for several years about 20 years ago. Our day exploring the (illegal, non-tourist) catacombs was definitely one of the highlights.

Not for the claustrophobic! There were sections like the last images that you had to wade through (especially near our entry in an abandoned railway tunnel as I recall). One passage was just 40 cm high so we had to slither commando-style on our bellies for 5-10 meters or so between slabs of solid bedrock. Our guide had us turn out our lights as we crawled, and we emerged in a chamber with a crunchy floor. When he lit his flashlight it turned out that the floor was entirely human bone fragments (not at all neat like those other images). We sat down and had lunch there. 🙂

We passed by a few of the more artistic areas shown here but most of the experience was just pitch dark long corridors of stone, frequently branching. Some areas had pipes or cables and appeared to have been in use not too long ago. Occasionally we encountered other wanderers, maybe a total of 20 or so during the whole day. Sometimes there were street signs just like the official Parisian ones that let you orient yourself, but mostly you would be lost without a map. Ours was hand drawn, similar in scale to the one in the photo, not nearly as big as the digital map. Great experience!

Imagine being the poor GPS that has to navigate that maze 😂 2 hours late above ground, 2 years late underground!

    5. Very interesting that the ossuary only makes up a very small part of the whole network

    6. Why don’t they send drones down there to only turn left (or right) then return home when battery low. Rinse and repeat, surely they could map it pretty quick!

Does anybody know what level you have to be for this dungeon and what’s the boss drop?
