When I picture Uncle Roger this isn’t who I picture.

Two brothers were of draft age. One had flat feet so was exempt (did not keep him from being a police officer for 25+ years). The other took advantage of a year of college deferment.. but then did not study so lost it.
Our father flew in a PBY in WWII looking for submarines, and that eligible brother realized that Vietnam did not have any subs at the time, so he enrolled in the Navy Reserves to chase subs. Did so for 25+ years.

My buddy dropped out of high school for his senior year to enlist at 17. He’d already seen 4 classmates return home in body bags. He enlisted in the Air Force and worked in a nuclear arms warehouse in New Mexico for most of his hitch.

The popular movement against the war, with mass non-violent demonstrations, was just starting to gain momentum in early 1967

This reminds me of the photo of my grandad took when he joined the army in 1963. He wanted to escape the family farm and it didn’t help that his dad was an abusive prick who beat him and cheated on his wife and he grew up in heavily segregated rural South Carolina.

Dad did that in 1953 for the same reason. Supposed to end up in Korea but got pneumonia at the last part of boot camp at fort ord. Ended up with a different unit and instead spent his service time in Alaska.

My father did the same. Enlisting meant he had a choice what he wanted to do.

Sergeant Hulka: “Son, there ain’t no draft no more.”
Cruiser: “There WAS one?”
