I say this to my daughter all the time: “just tell me the truth, I won’t be mad. I will be disappointed, but not mad.”

I can’t get mad if I’m already mad, duh.

My mom used to say this and then would proceed to beat the living shit out of me after. All it taught me was to fear her and hide everything I could.
With my son, I’m going to actually follow through. I’ll likely still get mad, but I’ll do my best not to raise my voice and definitely won’t hit him. I will, however, explain why he was wrong for what he did and tell him that there will need to be (reasonable) consequences. I really hope trust, context, responsibility, and resulting consequences will be a much better teacher than what I had.

So I actually did this with my son, didn’t get mad, and now he tells me everything. It’s crazy.

I learned early not to trust my parents with embarrassing details…
They broadcast my insecurities regularly for conversation with their friends while I was in earshot and when I’d had enough of it I told my father I didn’t appreciate it, his response was basically “your story is mine to tell.”
Kinda sucks because I could have used advice for a lot of things in my teenage years but after that comment from my dad I stopped bothering confiding in them when I had any issues.

We have an agreement with my kid: “you can have your freedom as long as I have transparency”
You go partying? Tell me where and who will be there. If you’re at one point uncomfortable there, one call and I pick you up. No questions asked.
