The longest government shutdown in U.S. history lasted 35 days, from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019. It was primarily due to a dispute over funding for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Republicans have majority of all three branches of government, IOW trump and the GOP can't govern

The Democratic party is the minority party in all three branches.

    1. also…there were *three* shutdowns during his first term:

      >There were three government shutdowns during Trump’s first term. The last occurred in late 2018 and continued over the festive season.

      >The majority of government activity came to a halt for a full 34 days from Dec. 22 to Jan. 25, making it the longest closure of its kind in U.S. history. This beat the previous record of 21 days, set under President Bill Clinton.

    2. Republicans can’t run a government well if they keep causing shutdowns and recessions left and right.

“The adults are in charge” was one of their cringe worthy slogans when Trump won. Looks more like it’s just man children in charge.

    3. So now he’s going to blame the upcoming recession on “the democrats shut down the government and caused the economy to crash” instead of his own crappy economic policies.

    4. I hav e no idea how this is athing, our Budget come s out tomorrow, (Ireland) Our Gvmtn wont shut down.

    5. This is one of the worst economies ever. Most Americans are barely holding on by their fingernails.

We just keep dumping more and more money to billionaires.

    6. And it was shut down at the order of Fox News. This one was also the result of Fox News meddling.

Oh, if only they’d tried to talk with him about those issues *before* the budget was due! /s

    8. It’s once again like so many other things with this authoritarian regime, it’s an abusers mentality. Why do you make me hurt so much? If you really loved me, you wouldn’t make me beat you. It’s not my fault I’m crippling our society, you make me do it.

I’m not a political person. I never have been. I don’t identify with either party.

The way I see it, both sides have good ideas and both sides have bad ideas. I can’t agree with either of them.

But—our government is trying *so hard* to highlight any differences they can between fellow humans and twist those into something sinister.

I really think the *blatant stupidity* speaks to so many here because it was designed that way. Over the last 50-60 years standards and morals have slowly been whittled away to the piercing point they are today.

I just hope it doesn’t end in *another* civil war.

Bro torched this country and gutted the shit out of useful agencies and then wants to blame the left. Why do people still believe this villain?

    11. I’m guessing it’s going to be the air traffic controllers who end this shutdown too. I don’t think they’re going to wait till they miss a month of paychecks this time either.

What a wanker, when will Americans realise they have a “Little Rocket Man” of their own, Donald Jong Un, rise up America fight the good fight, Trump is working for the enemy.

    13. These “so many programs, services and elements of Society that American rely on”; does he actually mean the ones he spent his first 100 days cutting with a chain saw? These programs, services and elements?

Dude is a total fucknut and his MAGA is just slurping it up. And that punctuation make me think he did NOT write a single word of this tweet.

    14. His only leverage – his whole life – is the fear that he can instill by saying no. “No, this deal isn’t good enough for me” and walking away.

Now the Democrats have that power. What does the deal maker do now?

For the first time, he has to give a little of what they want so that he can get what he wants. But he doesn’t want to give anything. In the zero-sum game that he plays, he views that as losing.

So he’s painted himself into a corner with no way out. My sympathies.

Does anyone honestly remember government shutdowns once they fall out of the news cycle? Except people who work in government? I guess maybe because I don’t rely on many federal resources. It seems like this fight happens every year but I can’t remember when it actually happened last.

The republicans don’t want to fund the democrat’s healthcare plan. Have they ever had a plan of their own beyond poor people should fuck off and die? They all say they want reliable healthcare for the people, but the left are the only ones that have brought forth a plan in recent memory.

“I’ll be happy to work with the Democrats, but first they need to give in to our demands.”

      Dude, what?

My party controls all branches of government but it’s my powerless opponents fault that we can’t get anything done!

    19. Short_Location_257 on

He is personally causing this shut down, he controls all 3 branches…. And the Supreme Court

Aren’t there any Republicans in D.C.? You’d think the Republican controlled House, Senate or President would be able to do something to work on approving a budget.

As was the case the last time we had to put up with you. The stock market is not the economy.

When in 2015 (tweet circulating on Reddit) he said any president who lets the government shut down is a complete failure to lead.
