I think it boils down to exposure. It’s really easy to criticize a group of ‘others’ when you don’t know them and just use racially charged propaganda to describe them.
Idk about Melania and how they met, but it seems clear that JD met Usha and fell in love with her personality and values. He sees her as a fully formed person, not just a member of some stereotyped group.
I’m sure at least a decent number of MAGA individuals would feel the same about many ‘ model minorities ‘ they meet.
It is easier to hate a group rather than an individual, especially when Fox and other media channels keep telling you how awful they are.
