UK acknowledged them immensely, both with “order of British India” and Victoria Crosses. Also led to them getting independence. Dont watch most American WW2 movies, gives a poor representation. India was crucial

You forgot about New Zealand!
Highest men lost per million in the commonwealth, renowned by even enemy commanders as being a formidable fighting force… See how easy this is? India simply falls under the British Empire.

USSR were only part of defeating the axis because the nazis betrayed them. Before that they were helping each other, even invaded Poland together.
Not to mention that some of the USSR casualties thats always cited as their ”contribution”, came from their wars of agression when they invaded eg. Poland, Baltics, Finland.

A lot of countries fought like hell and paid the price for it. Canada sent almost 10% of it’s population, India did the above, China s u f f e r e d, and so on
The casualties amongst groups besides the army aren’t given nearly enough credit. Countries on all sides committed atrocious acts to the citizens of the lands they took. Rape, slaughter, and looting are seldom mentioned. Merchant Marines are never given the credit they deserve.
So many people deserve credit they don’t receive or have their suffering whataboutismed that it’s mind boggling.

Indians were only pawns for the British and their interests.
The war was not related to them slightly but they were a British colony and they had to abide.

No mention of China? China fought Japan since 1933 and suffered the second greatest number of casualties. Second only to the USSR

While 2.5m Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis fought, and ~87k died, the war didn’t have a lot of popular support. Many Indians and especially a lot of the major Indian domestic leaders saw Japan and the Nazis as potential help for breaking free of British rule.
So between that and the famines and the fact that independence came almost as soon as the war ended…Indian participation in the war tends to get treated as a colonial obligation that is kind of 😬😬😬 instead of as a willing and enthusiastic participation to be celebrated.

They certainly contributed a lot, which they achieved by sending troops to support both sides.

I mean even India has a complex relationship with recognising its own involvement, tied in as it is with the last days of the British Raj.
A lot of those men who fought in the war didn’t really bring it up because post independence it was awkward to have fought for the “enemy” as weird as that is to us.

Read Field Marshall Slim’s book on the Burma campaign, Defeat to Victory. He was absolutely glowing in his admiration and respect for the Indian troops under his command.
Their bravery and sacrifice didn’t go unnoticed.
