    1. People were expecting a more traditional monument. When they first saw sketches of the proposed Memorial it looked underwhelming, Many even thought it would be ugly.

      I have an older cousin who served in Vietnam. Like many Vietnam vets, he thought they were being overlooked compared to other veterans. I remember him voicing that complaint.

      A couple years later, he happened to go to DC for business. He had a chance to see several of the sights, but said the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was “the highlight of the trip”. He said it was very moving to see in person and that he didn’t “get it” until he was there.

    2. bad thing is, it’s never hard for those making the decision to send OTHER people into battle.
