Context: this is the Hawaiian Kingdom just before Kamehameha invaded O’ahu and soon after King Kahekili of Maui’s death in 1794. Kalanikupule was argued as a weak King, contrary to he father, who’s reputation was very much feared. His father and uncle were sons of the Powerful Kekaulike of Maui. All the sons of Maui were competitive for their fathers crown and old descriptions say enjoyed a level of prestige no other royal house had tasted until that time. so, when Kahekili died, Ka’eokulani tried to take advantage and attempted to fight Kalanikupule on O’ahu. lots in Kalanikupule’s army, predominantly made up of O’ahu warriors were killed, but so was ka’eokulani, via cannon fire. by the end of this…Kamehameha had just arrived…and Kalanikupule was truly unprepared….he was killed shortly after in the battle of Nu’uanu, ending the Maui empire which lasted almost 400 years.
