What really changed the game was the mass production of drugs. Sure back then you’d have the odd boozehound back then, but the regular hobos were clean and sober. They had their own written symbols and codes, it was a subculture.
Now insane people and crack heads fill the streets. The streets have become unwelcome to the old fashioned bum. At least that’s how he explained it. I was only eleven at the time so I don’t know if I understood it all correctly or there were parts I left out but that was the gist.
