Bus Driver Signals To Driver When It Is and Is Not Safe to Pass

    1. My first thought was “What an idiot.” Don’t use your own judgement, pull out blind, at night, at speed and hope you’ve deciphered a random person’s code correctly.

    2. You can wave, flash, signal, whatever to your heart’s content. I’ll go when I determine it is safe.

I do not direct other drivers in traffic, and I ignore other drivers that try to wave me on or flash some code.

    3. Maybe if the driver backed off a few feet, he could see without going all the way into the other lane.

    4. sad fact: in Brazil, drivers follow this unwritten rule (flashing to the left=danger, flashing to the right=safe). In neighboring Argentina, it’s the oposite, I don’t know why. In the summers, many argentinian drivers crash and die on our roads because of this misinterpretation

    5. Sees a left turn signal
“oh ok it’s safe to go”
7 cars come flying the opposite direction
“no, no, that was the don’t go yet signal”

    6. id never put my life in other people’s hands like this, back off to see for yourself or just never pass

Saw a female bus driver do this in Northern Ireland. At an overtaking point on rural road she started indicating right to go up a tiny road and I was thinking she’s never making it in there wtf. Turns out there was a little moped in front of her that couldn’t be seen turning right so she was effectively protecting him. Fair play and good driving skills I thought

It was like this in Baja CA over 30 years ago, only it was left-blinker meant safe, right meant oncoming!

    9. This footage was recovered following the incident occurring on the subsequent passing attempt /s

In Australia trucks used to (some still do) give you a quick flick of the indicator to show it was safe to pass. Always gave them a flick both ways (1 right than quickly 1 left) when you’ve past to say thanks

    11. From my experience right signal is a sign to let the driver behind you know that it is safe to pass. Otherwise left signal is already used to signal that you are changing lanes to pass. So it already has another purpose it can be easily confused. If I were the car behind I would think why the bus is not overtaking even though it signals.

    12. The only signal I see is the driver signalling not to pass:

at the start the cam’s driver was about to pass but the driver signaled so that must mean “don’t pass”.

Intuitively, that makes sense too, if you are about to pass on the left and the driver in front signals that they are moving to the left, then you know that you aren’t being allowed to pass and should move back.

    13. I know that when flashing to the right it means it’s safe. I don’t think we’re taught this in France, or at least I wasn’t taught this in my driving school. But I already knew it cuz I saw this a couple of times when my parents were driving and there was a tractor or truck in front.

However, I’ve never seen the left indicator being used to signal danger. So this feels really strange to me, but I can definitely understand.

    14. In Finland drivers often signal to the right to indicate it’s safe to pass, but I don’t see the point in flashing left when it is not safe. Why signal at all if it’s not safe? one misunderstandment and a deadly crash has happened.

      In conclusion:

don’t indicate when it’s not safe to pass

Only indicate if you see miles of road ahead being sure that anyone in any car could make it, making sure that even if the driver behind you starts passing you 10 seconds late, he will still make it.

What’s the rush???? Is your pregnant wife in the back of the car? Stay in your lane behind the bus and chill.

    16. That left signal means it’s safe to pass in my country, mostly used by trucks. It would be the pass to heaven there for me.

In Brazil, when a driver helps you overtake, you flash your left blinker as a thank-you gesture after passing them

German here, thought this was normal driving behaviour when steering a larger vehicle.

Geez I would have assumed the opposite. Ots clear after he uses his signal and doesnt move, that its a signal to the other driver.

But a left turn signal seems like he would be saying to go, and and right turn signal to stay right. I don’t know. I feel like an arm, and 4 ways or something would have been more clear.

I probably would habe not signaled at all, and used 4 ways when it was clear
