      Wasn’t it an unstable mess, especially thanks to France being between the two parts of Charles V’s european lands?

      To be fair, his thought process was probably that the empire was too large to administer by one guy, and that the Habsburg dynasty would be better off split into multiple branches with the same end goal anyway

      Charlie’s main mistake was giving the Low Countries to Philip instead of Ferdinand. Doing that would save SO MUCH trouble… _80 years_ of them, methinks.

    4. Charles was burned out during his reign, I can’t blame him for not passing on the burden to one single successor

    5. Wasn’t really an empire, more of a property portfolio. Each area had basically nothing to do with each other, they just happened to have the same king, and he never even attempted to integrate them together

    6. To be fair from what I remember he was exhausted af and had to move around because there’s so much things he needed to handle.
