In my location, teachers don’t mind you using your own method that is different from theirs, they mind you using some methods that are different from the textbook method which was declared by the minister of education. In fact, they only teach you how to get points from the entrance exams decathlon scoring tables.

I got an F on more than one test because of this. Didn’t matter that I got the right answer, I didn’t get it “the right way” so it didn’t count.

To play devil’s advocate here, if the point is to teach you a method, then going an alternative way means you didn’t learn the thing you were meant to learn.
