Damn… I never knew this.. that’s sad that racism was such a norm back then..

It all makes so much more sense now. I was so confused as to why he was just destroying things.

    3. “Fixed”

I think we should be showing the original. What is the damage in showing a person destroying racist graffiti? Nothing.

Now it just looks like he is disrespecting his surroundings and doing property damage.

    4. Is this real or is the “banned” one just a clickbait fake? I don’t think they could just edit those out so easily in ‘91.

When he breaks the rear window you can see him through the window. If the graffiti was there originally you wouldn’t be able to see him. You’d have to edit him in which would be an expensive ordeal for low budget music video if even possible back then.

I remember watching the premiere of this video with my parents and being really confused about why he just decided to smash a bunch of stuff for no reason. Wish they’d left it as intended.

    6. Always wondered why Michael felt like beating up a car for no reason. Makes sense now.

      >videoclip shows the musician fighting against bigotry and hate

Society: “Absolutely not! Best make it look like it’s just a black person destroying property, much more relatable!”

    8. Everything looked normal and then … KKK Rules? I don’t know that a Klan member would tag KKK Rules.

    9. This is not true. The original video did NOT include the racist messaging on the glass.

The original video released in. 1991 was heavily criticised and in some cases banned as it made it seem it was a random act of violence this coupled with the implications around MJ transformation into a black panther and the “needless” destruction and the implications around the civil rights movement and wanton violence.

The racist slogans were added in a 1993 re-release of the video to give MJ a reason for his actions, symbolically attacking racism.

    10. You guys could just Google this.

The different versions of the video

Original 1991 version: In the controversial ending, Jackson’s character transforms into a black panther and smashes a car and windows. The windows and car are clean and have no graffiti. This led to accusations that the scene promoted gratuitous violence.

Digitally altered version: After the backlash, Jackson had CGI effects added to later versions. This made it clear that Jackson was lashing out against bigotry.

Broadcast versions: Most TV networks, including MTV, heavily edited or completely cut the controversial panther sequence from their broadcasts.

    11. This is false. The original, unaltered version is the one without the racist graffiti. He got a lot of flack for it when it was originally released in 1991, and apologized to his fans at the time, saying that the violent and suggestive behavior had been a “dance-style interpretation of the animalistic instincts of a panther” and ordered that the final scenes be removed from subsequent broadcasts. The CGI altered version was released in 1993, giving a new justification for the destruction of property.

    12. Pretty sure this is misinformation. The “fixed” version is the original version that was first broadcasted before that scene was removed from future runs. When the scene was brought back later on, it was digitally altered to add in the slurs to give the smashing of properly extra context, and that’s the “banned” version shown.

    13. As [Wikipedia explains](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_or_White#Controversy_and_censorship), the original 1991 video just showed him smashing the windows with no graffiti. After Jackson received a lot of criticism for showing such violent vandalism, in 1993 he released a digitally-altered version that **added** the racist graffiti, to make it appear his actions had some justification. Contrary to what the video says, the original version **without** graffiti was censored by Jackson himself after its original release, and the version **with** the added graffiti was the “fixed” version.

    14. Fake. Watch the “graffiti” on the glass break in slo-motion/pausing through the frames. Photoshopped.

Yeah… that’s one of the scenes that comes to mind when I hear complaints about “woke censorship” nowadays. But this sort of suppression of freedom of expression has been running since… far I can remember, and I’ve been watching TV from the 60s to 2000s and there was a ton of off content. This clip (banned version), for example, was part of an amateur VHS on an “independent art” shelve in a movie rental. It was a compilation of banned or “riske” video clips like “Relax” by Frankie goes Hollywood, “Body languange” from queen and some way freakier stuff from germany and france. We were cool for owning things that were not being aired. We would have BBQ parties and one of the teasers besides the beer and food was “the guy is gonna show us a clip from Madona naked” or something like that…

    16. well that clears stuff up. I thought it was emotional trashing of a car. like street fighter

    17. OG Original music video for song called Black and White (fucking Duh!) had anti-racisism imagery that was smashed out by MJ during a balletic and very heavily criticized damce break in the middle of the video…it made white owned sponsors, ya know ALL of them back then, uncomfortable so this shit show white wash began to pretend it was never there to start with…

Cause us brown and black people smash things randomly since we’re savages…

    18. I always wondered what was so controversial about that. I was pretty young when it came out, but I remember there being an issue

I like how they ran out of ideas after the first two, like “ok, we got a swastika, and the N-word.. what else?”

“What about KKK Rules, but like if you wrote it on a Trapper Keeper?”

    20. I miss Michael. I hated him for awhile because the media told me too. Then I learnt the media is mainly evil.
