In second grade we had a mock election in our school. I don’t remember who actually won, but I personally voted for Bush if only because I didn’t like Dukakis’ eyebrows. Ah the naive days of childhood.

Old guy here: It wasn’t so much the publicity stunt that killed his candidacy, it’s what the Republicans did with it. They ran an ad with the video of him in that tank and listed all the military spending bills he opposed, and ended it with the shot of him smiling and pointing at the camera. The combination of looking like a dweeb in that helmet and his disingenuous attempt at looking like a military man sunk him. This and the Willie Horton ad effectively painted him as the weak on defense, weak on crime liberal stereotype.

Americans didn’t see a photo of Dukakis in a tank. We saw a video of him riding in the tank, smiling and looking like a goof. One commentator said he “looked like Snoopy.” And he did!
