Not an amercian but the answer is the 1% blaming others because they are above the law

The budget requires more than the normal 50% acceptance. So the government can’t just push it through but has to find a compromise with the Opposition.
Btw, this is one of the best Mechanism in a democracy. Many other countries have that in way more things than “just” their budget.

This is referring to the current government shutdown in America.
Despite the Republican Party holding the power in both the Senate and the House, they are actively blaming Democrats for not giving them enough votes to avoid the shutdown, which means that some non-essential government services are now stopped and/or government employees not getting paid.

I wanna say that this gaslighting is oddly similar to something that happened about 85 years ago in mainland Europe. Something about blaming another group of individuals for problems that they had nothing to do with and demonizing them to distract the populace and give them a scapegoat for everything that’s gone wrong. Or am I drawing parallels that only I can see?

Senate vote was 55 to 45.
Someone, who apparently is to not be named raised the necessary votes needed to 60.
It wasn’t the GOP.
Own your actions.

They always want to be in positions of power, yet not to be held responsible for their actions. Acting like toddlers there always has to be another one who’s to blame, as playing the victim is an easier position. Which also makes you look like a poor person who needs sympathy, because boohoo, our decisions came to bite us, we didn’t know now we demand special treatment ohhh dear leader.

can someone ELI5 how this happened this time, with the reps fully in control?

Control doesn’t mean dictatorship. Democrats can block bills in the Senate and refuse compromises, which is often what leads to shutdowns.

Republicans want to pass a budget that will kill American citizens. They need 60 votes for it. Democrats all rightly refused to kill their own people so refused to vote for it. Without a budget being passed no federal workers can get paid. Republicans blame democrats for not blindly agreeing and democrats blame republicans for not being willing to negotiate against not killing their own people

The rules are whatever they need to be for the Dems to be the bad guys and the GOP to get rewarded.Â
