For those that don’t remember, Bush was an absolute embarrassment. It’s only how low Republicans have sank now that makes like him look like decent, civil human in comparison

so close in fact that its believed al gore actually won, but the deciding state for this election, florida, when they tried to do a recount due to voting machine errors, was ordered to stop by the supreme court.

    3. “But he’s a flip-flopper!”

O… you mean he changes his position when new facts and information come out? And that’s bad?

Was such a crok of shit.

    4. Yep, fall of America…..*takes drag of cig* remember when we could have supported Afghanistan in the 90s to fight the Taliban?

    5. Still timely. Members are on the MAGA Supreme Court who ordered the votes to stop being counted. It is the best democracy* money can buy.

*The term “democracy” does not necessarily imply it is a democracy or even a republic. Terms and conditions may apply. Constitution may be altered without reasons given. Checks and balances subject to MAGA Approval. These conditions may be altered at any time. Offer may expire at election or any other time.

    6. All because stupid old people in Florida couldn’t punch a fucking hole in a fuckin paper ballot. Thanks Florida

    7. Also the reason networks have been slower at calling elections since they got caught trying to swing the vote by calling Florida for Gore before much of the state had voted.

    8. Closest in history? Not saying you’re wrong, but couldn’t we argue that 1800, 1824, and 1876 were closer? (i’m not trying to make a point. I’m really asking.)

    9. Bush was a horrible president. 9/11, Katrina & all the people he killed in Afghanistan & Iraq..

It’s surely just a coincidence that the swing state in question and the election process in that state was being oversaw by the brother of the guy that won.

For those that done know, Jeb Bush, brother of George W. Bush was governor of Florida. The vote was too close to call the state one way or the other, so they had to do a recount. They sited “faulty ballots “ which left a “hanging chad” so they could justify the recount.

As soon as they got the minimum number of ballots for George W to win, Jeb called the vote over and had them stop counting. This ensured that Florida went to Bush, and with Floridas electoral college votes, that meant Bush won the presidency.

There were several lawsuits after the fact of course, and the Supreme Court had two choices. Throw out the entire state of Floridas votes, and thus the election. Or allow its votes to stand and keep the peace.

      Guess which one they chose

The job of the president (sadly) is *not* to be the best person, the best leader, the smartest, wisest, bravest,..
but to be the most entertaining for the people.

    12. Actually, the closest election was the 1876 election where neither candidate could prove they won a majority of votes and the president was decided by a committee where the democrats agreed to let Republican Rutherford B Hayes be president in exchange for the Republicans ending reconstruction in the South.

    13. Showing my age here, but I was in my senior year at FSU in 2000. It was a wild time to live in Tallahassee during that fiasco, BUT… journalists and their crews were paying HUGE amounts of money to camp out on couches and floors. We made a ton of money during that time.

I remember we had a mock election in 3rd grade. I was a little boy in a little town in Texas. Bush was from my state and that’s who I voted for in my school election. Al Gore was the VP for Clinton…but I hadn’t heard of him before…I was watching cartoons not CNN or Fox News. In all honesty, Bush nearly dropped the ball…and looking back he did since he lost the popular vote and the electoral college came in to save his election. I have noticed that the presidency flip flops between Republican and Democrat. I didnt really notice many back to back presidents from the same party. The real election was the primary to see who got the Republican nomination and I was too little to really know who all ran for it against Bush.

    15. “SCOTUS stole it for Bush”

No they didn’t Democrats recount strategy was a mess and by the time they got a coherent plan of statewide by the State FL court (which gave Gore things he didn’t ask for) it was too late and too messy. The movie Recount which has Dems as the slight protagonist bias wise (Ironically the Republicans portrayed despite being the antagonist had a party for the debut) is a very good and fair retelling of the events.

    16. Gore won.

All of our current problems (climate change, a crazy republican party, ballooning debt from tax cuts for the rich, Iraq, etc) were caused by the Supreme Court stealing this election for Bush.

    17. If you haven’t, you really should look into the 2000 presidential election ESPECIALLY in Florida.

If you want to talk about an election that was stolen, there’s your stolen election.

Geroge Bush Sr was former president and *former head of the CIA*, and the state that was the deciding factor had Jeb for governor.

One of the most blatant thefts of democracy the US has ever seen and it set the stage for the next republican administration to basically do whatever they wanna do.

Gore was elected President by the American people. It was close, but it’s clear today that he won. However, a literal insurrection took place (the Brooks Brothers Riot) which, combined with an ineffective voting method, prevented Republicans from having to acknowledge his victory just long enough for the Supreme Court to completely overstep their authority and just choose the president themselves.

    20. Reminds me the jokes about Rafał Trzaskowski being ,,a 2-hour President”.

He proclaimed his victory shortly after the first round of vote counting and was certain that by that point, his presidency will just be a matter of formality. Turns out, he had lost and by a lot.
