There was also no guarantee that the US was going to pull out of Vietnam. Mind you one of the reasons why the Cuban Missile Crisis escalated the way it did was due to Kennedy fearing the public backlash that would surely follow if he didn’t do anything. JFK was a lot more pragmatic than people give him credit for.

At least he was genuinely elected president. Henry Clay gave it three swings and struck out.

Then why’d they kill him

JFK’s entire legacy rests on the missile crisis, good vibes, and his death. Had he lived, his unsuccessful presidency would’ve given him a reputation like Carter. Good speeches but ineffectual.

This versus LBJ’s “I don’t care if I’m from Texas, I said we doin’ Civil Rights and Medicare now.”

Alternate history: the assassination fails. During the re-election campaign, JFK’s health finally collapses. As he lies bedridden in Hyannisport, LBJ ‘reluctantly’ accepts the nomination. A groundswell of sympathy for the President who worked himself half to death for America leads to a landslide in ’64.

I always got into fights with people in history classes about how good JFK was. He was realing from the failure of Bay of Pigs, Vietnam getting annoying and despite (the rightful) praise he got for handling the Cuban Crisis, he was seen as weak. He went to Dallas to help sure up Governor’s position because DNC infighting. LBJ is basically JFKs legacy because he knew how to govern and play politics unlike JFK.

Once I learned History I tried to talk to my parents about JFK not being as great a President as they seem to remember. They would not accept
