The article is a month old and there aren’t any other updates on the story. It also costs $557,000 dollars for 3 districts apparently.

You have no idea how dystopian this sounds to an outsider.

    1. You know, my bingo card is really blank rn. Didn’t have “legalized drone strikes in US schools” as a space.

    2. If there was something that could really prevent this from happening in the USA, but I guess “money” (because it is not really about freedom) is more important than the lives of the children.

Kids won’t have to go through all the effort of bringing daddy’s pew pew to school, they’ll just figure out how to hack the drones instead. What could possibly go wrong?

How long do you think it will be tell some bullied nerd hacks into there school’s drone fleet and shoots up there school from home?

Imagine angel drones everywhere your look, school, work places, stadiums, homes. And doing anything against what the angels consider good can get you in deep trouble

According to the company behind this, the drones are armed with a speaker system to order an attacker’s surrender, noise deterrents, pepper balls, an attached lance that can break through windows to gain entry to closed rooms, and as final resort the drone itself will be used as a “kinetic weapon” by flying at the attacker at 40-70mph. The drones operate in swarms of 3-4, piloted by “expert” drone pilots.

This is all incredibly dystopian. Apparently, they plan to place clusters of drones in 5-6 strategic locations around the schools to facilitate rapid deployment anywhere in the schools within seconds of a confirmed threat. It’s not clear how this will work logistically. Is the there a full-time team of monitors and pilots who are always standing by to respond to an incident? Are they on-site, or remote?

Another concern is that schools will want to play with their new toys, and begin using these drones to respond to banal school incidents such as fights, or students mingling in the halls between classes. And we’ll have to expect live drills for practicing the response, and acclimating students and staff to the deployment of these drones.

Ultimately, I think this is madness. The expense for this human-operated system is massive, the risks are substantial, and the psychological effects on both students and staff incalculable. This money would be better spent on delivering excellent education, and employing more passive and conservative strategies for ensuring safety.

    7. This is going to cost a lot of money and save no one. It’s like they aren’t even analyzing the real world threats the drones are intended to address.

The only thing worse than a stupid plan, is an expensive and stupid plan.

What a great idea. A security system that can be defeated by a closed door 🤦‍♂️

    9. The number of problems with this ridiculous idea… Are these _autonomous attack drones??!_ Are they being remotely piloted? If remotely piloted, you’ve got to control them with either an independent signal, or via school wireless. While independent is more secure, there’s no such thing as “unhackable” and now you have a _remotely controlled_ flying school shooter to chase down and murder students!

I know, Tubi movie, anyone? Just need a couple of iPhones and a high-school that will let you shoot! So to speak, lol. 🤣

    10. Cause there’s no way armed flying robots could go wrong. I swear, these people will do anything but gun control 🙄

Are those automated? I really doubt there is personnel capable of controlling those drones with success. There are going to be mass shootings as usual with additional casualties from drones hitting people.

    12. Black Mirror gotta cancel their next season because real life dystopia is happening faster than they can predict it.

    13. because the police are cowards who won’t go in and the government are cowards for not doing the one thing that would prevent school shootings
