Turtles Frozen Completely in Ice! (Hibernation)

    1. Btw They aren’t dead, just in a kind of hibernation state called brumation. Slowed breathing and heart rate or no breathing at all. They can do that for months in the ice.

    2. Fun Fact: during brumation, turtles absorb oxygen from the water using blood vessels in the cloaca.

      Basically, they breathe through their butts.

      Imagine falling through ice into Snapping Turtle Pond. And all the snappers are extra pissed because they were napping before you came crashing through their roof.

      I was once skating on ice that clear and I saw something move under the ice so I looped around and it was a turtle swimming. One of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen, mainly bc I had never imagined that turtles did anything but burrow into mud come winter.
