90 years ago today, local villagers in Shami accidentally unearthed a 2-meter statue while digging in the area. Shortly after, it was moved to the National Museum of Iran and dated to 50 BC. The Shami Statue is now considered the single most important work from the Parthian Empire. [1841×962]

After local villagers discovered the statue in Shami village (Izeh city, Khuzestan province), it was reported to Iranian authorities and transferred to the National Museum of Iran. The statue immediately caught the attention of archaeologists because of its size, craftsmanship, and rarity as a large Parthian work. Made of bronze, it depicts a Parthian prince or nobleman.
The famous British archaeologist Sir Aurel Stein visited the discovery site in early 1936, roughly six months after the statue was unearthed. Today, its one of the museum’s most important artifacts. In 2020, a memorial statue was built at the discovery site, serving as a tribute to the local community’s role in discovering the statue:

I’m 1.98cm tall and I really doubt those guys are that short. My wife is 163cm and comes up to about the same point those tallest guys do on me. Given that it looks like the statue is up off the ground by a fair bit (or these guys are microscopically short).
