[Paul Dardé](https://www.museedelodeve.fr/oeuvre/virtuose-a-25-ans) created Éternelle douleur at the age of 25, just after completing his year of training. Having studied at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and Rodin’s studio, it was more likely his trip to Italy and his readings of mythology that firmly established the theme of Medusa in the artist’s mind. Carved from a block of gypsum gleaned from the heights of Lodève, the work was exhibited seven years later alongside the large Faun at the 1920 Salon des Artistes Français.
