It’s interesting how long it takes technology like this to make its way to giant corporations. Craft breweries have had similar packaging for 4-6 packs for probably 5+ years at this point.

In Australia/new Zealand, they come fully enveloped in cardboard. Also you can only get cans as a multi pack because they are easily recycled. The plastic bottles only come as singles.

If you do some kind of stress test to your cardboard bottle holder and whoopsie it breaks before the plastic rings would have…you’ve just trashed the carbonation in 6 bottles of soda.
