It’s more complicated then that. First off Hitler didn’t apply to the wrong school. He wasn’t that stupid. When his application failed, it was recommended he apply for the architecture school since he did have an eye for painting buildings.
As for why he got rejects Hitler really half-assed his application, which is funny for someone who had basically bet everything on art up to this point. Notably, the portfolio he submitted had no portraits, and that was even listed as the main reason for his rejection, it was just a collection of his landscapes. And as art critics point out, while he could paint a decent mountain, even his landscapes had some major problems. Hitler wasn’t good at framing a scene with people or perspective. Like if you look up one of his paintings with people in it the people often feel secondary to the backgrounds, like someone just threw them in as an afterthought. It’s why you often hear Hitler was denied because his style was outdated. Landscapes were considered old school at the time, and Expressionism which focused heavily on examinations of people and portraiture was in vogue. But no Hitler just sucked at drawing people and preferred drawing buildings and mountains. Mind you he’s doing all of this trying to get accepted to one of the top schools in Europe.
tl;dr: Hitler applied to one of the top schools in Europe, with a bare bones application that showed his passable to decent skills. And it was recommended he go into architecture cause he clearly just wanted to draw buildings.
