It was a lose-lose situation for them either way

There were Native Americans on both sides of the conflict. They had their own alliances and rivalries and hedged their bets on which outcome would benefit them most. The same happened during the Revolution.

There were more natives helping the union than helping the confederation. Sadly, both groups were considered the enemy by the same people they were supporting.

Well… That backfired. Lincoln took natives joining the CSA as treason (wich it was) and therefore anulled a bunch of treaties with them.

    4. According to the internet, roughly the same number of native americans fought for the Union as fought for the Confederacy.

      Roughly 3500, in both cases.

Showing only one of those two choices as though the other didn’t exist at all is both deeply ahistorical and, in this case, profoundly racist.

      Well done.

    5. This meme seems pretty inaccurate, it makes it seem like all Native Americans were in unison which they were far from. They were also pretty dependent on slavery at that point, just like the southerners were. This was probably more important to them than a revenge tour against the Union.

There were a lot of Natives that fought for the Union as well, notably the Union had a Lieutenant Colonel who was from the Seneca tribe. He was even present at the surrender of Robert E. Lee

Not saying that there wasn’t any that fought just to defeat the Union since the trans-continental railway was underway and land confiscation was very common but this meme makes it seem like that’s the only reason. They were smart enough to know if the confederacy won, they’d be doing the same thing as the Union.

Certain tribes allied with either side for a variety of reasons, like all of history, it’s just not that simple.

The Union was in the middle of building the transcontinental railroad, manifest destiny, and Western settlement all throughout the Civil War. Enemy of my enemy.

    7. I mean it’s kind of a no brainer to support the side recognizing you as an equal human being and giving you representation in the government over a racist genocidal Union

    8. Half truth some native peoples fought for the confederacy while others fought against them. This actually led to a lot of conflict since the last of the native Americans were being forced into Oklahoma together

    9. Reminds me of the argument that nobody really won the war of 1812 but the natives certainly lost

Can make similar points about the revolutionary war or the seven years war and the Mexican American war and probably others
