Hey guys!
As you might already know; few month ago I discovered an extraordinary Roman Republican denarius issued by Claudii Tiberii Nero, dating to 79–78 BC, on arable land near Xanten (Germany). What makes this coin truly remarkable is not just its age or rarity, but its exceptional state of preservation – virtually unheard of for this type.
This denarius is a "subaeratus", meaning it has a copper core plated with silver – a cost-saving practice occasionally used during times of silver shortage or monetary strain in the late Roman Republic. Most subaerate coins are heavily corroded today, often missing their silver surface entirely or appearing as rough, illegible fragments.
In stark contrast, this specimen is:
Fully intact with visible silvering
Extremely sharply struck, with clear legends and a complete border of dots (beaded border)
Bearing a well-defined banker's mark in the form of a "T" – rare on subaerate coins
Such features are rarely found on Republican subaerati, especially as surface finds. The survival of this coin in such pristine condition, without corrosion or silver loss, is genuinely exceptional.
Why it matters:
Republican subaerati are far less common than those from the Imperial period
Coins with intact silver plating and visible banker's marks are extremely rare
As an unstratified surface find, its state of preservation is nearly miraculous
Given that it was found near the ancient Roman colonia Xanten (Colonia Ulpia Traiana) – one of the most important Roman cities north of the Alps – this coin offers a small, but important glimpse into monetary circulation and economic practices in the region during the 1st century BC.
This discovery is a small numismatic sensation for the local history of Xanten and the Lower Rhine region, and it deserves to be recorded and studied as part of the area's Roman legacy.
My Archeologist are already informed about the find, so the denarius is scheduled to be formally submitted for examination and documentation as an archaeological find in early August of this year.
I hope you like this coin 😉
