So I have to start with talking about suspenders

The way you wear trousers with a belt and the way you wear them with suspenders is different. Suspenders usually require the top of the trouser to sit on the upper most part of the waistline while belts are just below the waistline above the crouch.

Obviously belts in one way or another existed since prehistoric time (for example in the medieval times it was common to tight the trousers with a piece of string) but the modern belt is from the time of WW1.

During the war there was an acute shortage of fabric material because the need for so many military uniforms. The suspender loving society of the late 19th century had to adapt and to save fabric trousers were made to fit lower on the waistline. But suspenders look worse and are less functional at this length. So instead of “hanging” the trouser with suspenders belts regain popularity as a functional way to tight trousers and now suspenders are all but instinct
