Kinda wondering why a binocular box on a ship needs a key when it is likely where only crew can get to it…

First vovage of a brand new expensive ship, iceberg warnings over the radio and not one person thinks “we could just break open the box”……. I honestly don’t buy that the senior crew would be just like, well nothing we can do, it’s locked.

Why did a huge ship like the Titanic not have multiple binoculars? Why was the one set of binoculars locked in a box? Why was there only ONE key to open the box? Why was the box not forced open?
This doesn’t seem very believable.

The reason why they didn’t break open the box is they didn’t know there were binoculars in there. It’s not a common practice for lookouts to use binoculars because that significantly limits the visual field, binoculars are only used to get a closer look at something that has already been spotted. Because of that, it’s very doubtful that those binoculars would have helped Titanic in any way.
