As a longtime book editor who was among the zillions of in-house editors laid off between 1998-2010, this surprises me not at all. There’s usually one overworked managing editor who assigns out the work to a freelancer. The manuscript will not include the cover so it doesn’t get a thorough edit. Just a going-over by art & production, which are important jobs but they’re not editors. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
