This Winged Nike was made to celebrate the victory at the battle of Sphactheria (in which a small contingent of Spartans surrendered to the Athenians in an unprecedented event) during the Peloponnesian Wars and it stands now @ the super Olympia Museum.
It considerably predates the Winged Nike of Samothrace and I found it interesting that it stood @ Olympia where all Greeks, including Spartans, could see it.
The dedication read:
“The Messenians and the Naupaktians dedicated this to Zeus
Olympios as a tithe from the enemies.
Paionios of Mende made it
and in making the acroteria for the temple he was victorious.”
