This was taken during the time that nearly the whole island was “purchased“ by an Australian sheep farming company and the native Rapa Nui people were prevented from farming, forced to live in the area that is now Hanga Roa and essentially made to work on the sheep ranch to survive. This situation existed until the 1960’s.
